Gimme more …. Indian pickles !!!

Give me some raw mango pieces marinated in a concoction of red chilli powder, warm oil, mustard powder, fried ginger paste and tempered with Indian spices … give me some lime pieces infused with fenugreek powder, jeera(cumin) and red chilli powder, give me some unripe tamarind ground with green chillies and tempered with mustard seeds, give me some drumsticks in red chilli powder, well incorporated with sesame oil and tempered with mustard seeds… I say give me more Indian pickles !!!!!

Indians love their pickles and more so we South Indians. No not the ones that are available here in the US. Not those dills and cucumbers marinated in a saline solution… No sir, not that. I am talking about the spicy saga of Indian pickles. The summer, the heat and the intensity associated with pickle making. No vegatable is spared … all of them yanked when young and dabbed and dressed and decked to turn into super flavorful pickles. Piping hot rice, dollop of ghee and raw-mango pickle or any pickle for that matter. MMMh MMMh MMMh .. Na samiranga (Telugu for “Oh ! Sweet Jesus!! “)

Recently a dear friend of mine, C, was kind enough to share her stash of home-made pickles with me. She gave me 3 types of Andhra pickles. Yes, authentic home-made Andhra pickles. Nope, not the pesticide-borne Priya pickles. Morning, noon and night the only food I eat is Pickle + Steamed white rice and ghee or curd rice with a side of any pickle. Yayy baby, I am pickling :P :P

There is a store here in Redmond that allows for ceramic painting called “Creatively Yours”. I really love going to that store to unleash the nearly non-existent artist in me. Once you are done with your piece, they burn , glaze and give it back to you in 4 days. Cool, no? So, here you go.. my magnum-opus ( Stop giggling you all)

“Vindu” plate

I usually cook rice in pressure cooker. Prestige pressure cooker, infact :D . Very easy and efficient.

This is my entry for JFI-Rice event hosted by the lovely Sharmi of Neivedyam

Find here an exclusive article on cooking rice in microwave by our lovely Vaish baby. I don’t like cooking in microwave and I try to avoid it as much as possible… but that article is worth reading for how its written :)

Mythili, excellent creative ceramic work. the center spiral has a lot of symbolism not only in indian designs but also in native american art. the colors and patterns are very good. Thanks for sharing it with us!
