Pomegranate Pulihora / Danimma Pulihora

Published by mythili at 3:27 pm under Black gram,Pomegranate,Rice,Yogurt/Curd

Everybody is talking about Danimma(telugu) aka Pomegranate. First it was Jai and Bee @ Jugalbandi and then Manisha with those waffles story.  (Btw, congratulations Manisha !!!! )

Inspi’red’ I bought one the other day. Rich in antioxidants, the little red (sometimes white) arils looked like brightly glowing rubies. The fruit I got tasted very sour. Yes, very very sour. And thus Pomegranate Pulihora was born.

–ingredients————————————

  • Pomegranate arils – 1 cup
  • Cooked Rice – 2 cups
  • Salt – 1 tsp/according to taste
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 8
  • Red Chillies – 5
  • Oil -1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard and Cumin seeds – 1 tsp each

–procedure————————————-

  • In a food processor pulse the pomegranate arils for a few seconds.
  • Squeeze and filter out the seeds. Keep aside the remaining juice. This should yield about 2/3 cup of juice.
  • Take cooked rice in a wide bowl and depending on your sourness less level, add the raw pom juice 1 tbsp at a time.
  • Mix in the salt and keep aside
  • Heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Then add the urad dal followed by curry leaves and the red chillies.
  • After a few seconds, when the mustard seeds pop add the tempering to the pom juice mixed rice. Mix well and serve with curd/yogurt

This is my first time making Pomegranate Pulihora and it turned out awesome. I didn’t expect it to turn out so well and I am sure I am going to make it a few more times.

I set aside some arils to sprinkle on daddyojanam (curd rice, tempered).  Great garnish!

Pomegranates from my mom’s garden

Anarkali(Pomegranate blossoms)

Moment of Zen:
KU, my alma matter defeated TAMU in College Football in a Big-12 matchup at Kyle Field(home of 12th man) and is 8-0 this season for the first time in 98 years.  Yes, very elated we are (N and I are from KU). Go ‘hawks !!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! That is such a neat idea! I am bored with the same old Puliohra preparations. This is an interesting variation. Now I just need to go find myself one of them beauties:-)

It’s pomegranates everywhere! I couldn’t believe my eyes when B&J posted their pictures as I had a similar post I was working on! Yesterday, I had pomegranate wine – it’s bliss! It’s a semi-sweet wine with a wonderful flavor of pomegranate. And I just returned from dinner out where we had hot pomegranate sake. It was even better than the wine!

Your Mom’s garden is lovely, to say the least! These pictures are really wonderful!

I can’t believe the dishes made with pomegranate! Mandira’s pom rasam is one and now your pulihora! My must-try list is slowly becoming unmanageable!

Bee – Yay to ‘hawks!!!!! Pomegranate shrubs are so common place back home in India (my place) Every house in the neighborhood would always burgeon with the juicy, red fruits.

TBC – Try it out and let me know how you like it?

Manisha – Pom wine?? Wow, that’s sounds so exotic. Ohhhhh I am already going weak in my knees! I want some pom wine .. now.
Yeah, my mom’s garden is truly lovely. She grows all kinds of stuff and even aloevera, sometimes. I will post more pictures someday.

Linda – Oh, they are pretty common place back in my home town in India. I am glad you liked the pictures.

Lakshmi – I once ate at Bhima’s near MG Road in Bangalore with pom arils in curd rice and picked up it up from there. Try it out and let me know.

Nabeela – You could try pom smoothie too. Just mix in some berries with the pom arils and give a gentle pulse in a food processor. Rich in antioxidantas and a healthy smoothie too.
