Maamidikaaya pachadi (Mango chutney)

Published by mythili at 6:31 pm under Quick Cooking,Raw Mango (mamidikaay)

I had talked to N’s mom the other day and got this recipe. I liked it soo much that I made the chutney almost immediately and it turned out great. This chutney has a tangy, sour, sweetish taste to it that is almost enticing. Also the simplicity of the chutney makes it charming too. The past few days I have seen many a mango chutney recipes around the blogosphere for eg., Sailu’s cocunut mango chutney , Shanti’s mamidikaya putnaala chutney, etc.

This one is very simple and pretty much uses only raw, green mango.

–ingredients—————————————

Medium Sized raw mango – 1
Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon
Asafoetida – a pinch (twice)
Red chillies – 4
Turmeric – a pinch
Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 4
Sugar – 1 teaspoon

–procedure—————————————

Wash the mango thoroughly and pat it dry. Cut the mango into small pieces. Keep aside

Roast 2 red chilies, a pinch of asafoetida, and 1/2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. Cool and keep aside. Blend the raw mango pieces, the roasted  chiili-feenugreek-asafoetida trio unti fine paste. Add turmeric and blend again. Add sugar and mix it thoroughly. Finally add salt according to taste.

Heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida and fenugreek seeds. Add this popu to the blended mixture. Serve with rice or dosa.

I am really tempted to try this chutney now that I have seen it on so many blogs. Btw the garden update was great and also keep us posted on how you like your steel pots after first use :-)

Mythili replies, Aswhini - The steel set is good but tough to clean. The steel pan is all stained with oil now and I did my best to remove. Its no more in presentable state. The dishes are good, but as I said takes a while to clean. So that’s about it. And thanks for your kind words.
