The past few weeks have been very, very hectic and life changing. We moved out of the Midwest to support N’s career move. Now I am in the Seattle metro area. As for me, I am telecommuting to work from here. I don’t know how I like this place yet. I am looking forward to exploring and learning more about this beautiful city.
So that’s the story in short.
Bunch of Baby Mustard Green from ‘Uwajimaya – Seattle’
I heard a lot about this Asian grocery store – Uwajimaya from Indira. So much that I went and bought the baby mustard greens she blogged about a while back. However I don’t like pureed spinach in any of my dishes. So I cooked the BMG (baby mustard greens) with pesara pappu (moong dal).
Read on to know how I cooked it.
Baby Mustard Greens Moong Dal curry
–ingredients———————————–
- BMG – the leaves finely chopped – 1 bunch
- Pesarapppu/moong dal – 1 fistful
- Garlic – 1 clove crushed
- Curry leaves – 6
- Onions/Red – finely chopped – 1/2 cup
- Green chillies – 7 vertically slit
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Jeera / Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Coriander – Few sprigs
- Salt and water as needed
Pesara pappu(moong dal) soaked in water.
–procedure—————————————–
- Wash the moong dal and soak in 1/2 cup of water for 4-5 mins.
- Meanwhile heat 1 – 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, jeera and curry leaves.
- Then add asafoetida and turmeric. Stir for min and add green chillies. Then add garlic.
- Now add onions and fry for 3-4 mins.
- Drain water from the pesarapappu and add it.
- Fry for a while until you see the pappu cooked. Finally add the chopped BMG and cook till the leaves wilt.
- Add salt and garnish with coriander.
- Serve hot with rice.

Welcome back! I was wondering what happened to you!
Best wishes on settling down in Seattle. Much success to N on his career move. Telecommuting is great! You can work in your jammies but beware! It’s the quickest way to turn into a slob! Ask me, I know. By the time I realized it, it was far too late to do anything about it!
BMG. Sigh. Need to go to the Asian grocery store to look for these soon.
Good to have you posting again!

From one recent transplant to another,
welcome to Seattle, Mythili .
Hey, BMG curry looks so good. I will try it next time when I purchase baby mustards.
So which Uwajimaya did you go? Uwajimaja in international district is very neat, big and about 15 minute walk from my home. Let me know, I can come and together we can do shopping there.
